There is an African influence and atmosphere on much of this record. I say "influence," because I would not make any claims to expertise on the subject of African music(s), though, I have been exploring that world recently and have found it very inspiring. While there is a harmonic simplicity to many of the forms, there is ample opportunity for the bass guitar to depart from mere root-playing, and grab notes from the higher register-- sometimes utilizing ghost notes, or breaking into 16th note flourishes. In this respect, there is much room for improvisation within the relative confines of the song structure while at the same time remaining danceable.
